it's been a good couple of years since we decided to offer up our little log cabin for rental and stuck these few words on to the internet. since then much has changed in the world and in our life as a family, but the attractions of glen rhuad lodge have remained constant as this site was only ever meant to be a pointer to the real place and is in no way a blog, diary or rough draft for a channel 4 film about life in the scottish hills, it hasn't experienced much in the way of updates. anyone in need of anecdotal details concerning the comings and goings-on around sandyhills will doubtless get them in conversational form from the lady-in-charge if and when they get in touch. in addition, one or two people have actually admitted that they chose to visit glen rhuad because they liked what was written here. so, a combination of that excuse and a degree of undeniable laziness has led me to add this little preface to what has always been here, in the hope that it is still relevant to those who have not yet had the pleasure of visiting us. most people who have done so claim that they have enjoyed the experience and we've enjoyed having most of them. maybe not the couple who filled every wastepaper basket in every room with their baby's nappies to save themselves a walk to the bin or the dear lady who complained that the sea was too far away when the tide was out. apart from them, we let let most people come back time and time again, mostly because they tend to become part of the ever-growing glen rhuad family. if you feel like finding out what the hell i am going on about, please read on... and then come and experience for yourself what it's all about. here comes the original stuff... as you read through this, or even better if you come and visit, you will probably notice that we are not the most relentlessly businesslike of landlords. the simple truth is that some years ago we found a place we liked to spend our weekends and holidays that was so enjoyable we decided to live here full-time. the result is we don't use the lodge as a getaway anymore because it's now just a short stroll up the hill. however, predictably, we cant bear to part with it, especially as so many friends and family seem addicted to its charms and we still love the place. so if it can earn its keep, not cause too much trouble and give other people as much pleasure as it has given us over the years, we plan to let it have a late career as the perfect base for anyone wishing to explore the stewartry coast or the wider attractions of the galloway region. we hope you will like it. now, to the more practical stuff. glen rhuad lodge is a very solidly built log cabin on a small private site. it stands in its own woodland garden and features just about everything you could need for a relaxing holiday or as a centre for an active break. it sleeps six in three bedrooms; one double, one twin, one with bunk beds - see the lodge layout page for more information. there is a comfortable open-plan living area, well-equipped kitchen, large wooded garden, great neighbours -including deer, red squirrels, badgers, buzzards & other birds. the site is small and secluded, but with many facilities nearby. the beach at sandyhills bay, the forest, golf, shop, swimming, restaurant/bar and stables are all within holiday walking distance and the town of dalbeattie or colvend village are both just a short drive away. it's a great place from which to explore the historic galloway region, or just sit back, enjoy the view and watch the world go by. not to mention an ideal location for anyone interested in golf, walking (coast, hill or forest), wildlife, sailing, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding or any of the many other delights of south west scotland. p.s glen rhuad means red glen and there is no such place. the lodge gets its name from a red deer farm, red squirrels, rowan berries, spectacular sunsets and in spring... bluebells. if you need to know more, give leigh a call on 01387 780693. all images and text © 2006 glen rhuad lodge
